The concept of Well-being for employees has moved from a nice-to-have to a must-have.
Stress, anxiety and depression are responsible for 30% more absence than any other “health” concern.
South Africans are more negatively affected than other nations with Discovery Health reporting that depression costs South Africa more than R218bn in lost productivity, as well as R190bn in presenteeism.
On the other hand, when employees are well & thriving, they are more productive, more creative, and more likely to stay with their company. They are also less likely to take sick days or have accidents. 76% of employers agree that employers are responsible for influencing employee wellness and changing behaviours.
Education and prevention remain the #1 priority for organisational Well-being spend. Defining a comprehensive well-being strategy, that contains concrete actions at various levels is an essential first step. We must equip and educate managers & leaders to lead their teams in a way that encourages their best performance but not at the expense of employee wellbeing.
